Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy (GAHT) is a cornerstone of medical transition for many transgender and non-binary individuals. Understanding the timeline of changes and what to expect can help set realistic expectations.

Feminizing Hormone Therapy

Feminizing hormones (estradiol, often with anti-androgens) produce gradual changes including breast development (3-6 months onset), skin softening (3-6 months), fat redistribution (3-6 months), and reduced body hair (6-12 months). Full effects develop over 2-5 years.

Masculinizing Hormone Therapy

Testosterone therapy produces voice deepening (3-12 months), facial hair growth (6-12 months), increased muscle mass (3-6 months), and cessation of menstruation (2-6 months). Voice changes and facial hair growth are generally permanent.
