Why Menopause Wrecks Your Sleep — and What Actually Fixes It
Night sweats are only part of the story. Falling progesterone, shifting estrogen, and a resetting circadian clock all disrupt sleep in midlife.

Why sleeping pills often disappoint
Sedative-hypnotics suppress the symptom without touching the cause. If the underlying driver is hormonal, sleep tends to fragment again as tolerance develops. That does not make them useless — short-term use has a place — but it explains why so many women cycle through them without lasting benefit.
What hormone therapy does
Estrogen therapy reduces vasomotor episodes by 75 to 90 percent in trials, which removes the fragmentation driver. Adding oral micronized progesterone at bedtime addresses the sedative loss directly; many women notice the effect within days rather than weeks. Rule out what is not menopause
Sleep apnoea rises sharply in women after menopause and is routinely missed because the presentation differs from the classic male pattern — fatigue and insomnia rather than loud snoring. Thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency, and restless legs are also common in midlife. A clinician who takes sleep seriously will screen for these before assuming hormones explain everything.
The non-negotiable basics
A cool bedroom, consistent wake time, limited alcohol (which reliably worsens both vasomotor symptoms and sleep architecture), and morning daylight exposure all measurably help. They are not a substitute for treating the hormonal driver, but they raise the ceiling on how well any treatment works.
